— Dr. Eivor G Johansson | Read time 2 min

Silence. Television. Radio. YouTube. Podcasts. Ringing phones. Just as noise triggers a range of detrimental effects on the body’s systems, silence can help heal those challenges. Studies show that silence can stimulate new cell growth in the brain, improve memory, and release tension in the brain and body. In fact, a study in the journal Heart concluded that two minutes of silence is more effective in relieving physical tension than listening to relaxing music. Moreover, a 2015 study published in JAMA Internal Medicine found that spending some time each day in silence, specifically in mindfulness meditation, reduced insomnia and fatigue in older adults.

Silence is Golden

When we take time to be silent, opportunities to get to know ourselves multiply. Silence opens the door for deeper visualization, and imagination, the keys to mastering your life. Learning to be comfortable with silence trains us to focus on the people in front of us, so we can really absorb what a friend, colleague, or partner is saying before jumping in with our own thoughts. We may see that other person in a way we haven’t before.

When we consciously practice silence and deep listening in our relationships —we may feel more compassion and empathy for the people in our lives. In the morning when you wake up Priming is your me-time.

When we put a pause on auditory stimulation, it’s easier to hear our intuition—to become acquainted with the still, small voice inside. Silence gives us the ability to help us tap into our innate wisdom wells.

I find the silence feels like the most honest and natural version of myself because I’m not trying to do or be anything in particular. Developing that ability makes it possible for me to feel at home in the world, wherever I am.

Greatness – is a grown power

I believe we all have the capacity for greatness. An average person has 12,000-80,000 thoughts per day and 98 percent are looping thoughts from the day before.

And 80 percent of our thoughts are negative. Most people are unconscious and speak just for the sake of speaking, out of boredom, feeling uncomfortable, pride, arrogance, and fear.

My Words of Wisdom are, speak when you have something to say instead of feeling the need to say something. We might depend on communication, but talking isn’t always communication.

Meditate to still the mind better

The easiest way to still the mind is through meditation, resulting in Alpha or Theta frequency. Check out how to choose a meditation style, and what style is for you. Both waveforms have slower oscillation that leads to higher frequency living where the heart and gut are actively acknowledged.

Most forms of mediation will, over time, result in a quieter mind. You can’t delete or control a chattering mind but you can simply allow thoughts to come and go uninterrupted. Once the incessant chatter of the mind has decreased, our compulsion to speak constantly will subside along with it.

There are a plethora of reasons why mystics and spiritual elders rarely speak, and why monks take vows of silence. Because it’s impossible to be perceptive of what’s going on inside and around you when you’re busy talking all the time.

Speak less and listen more

Intelligent people tend to speak less. The less you speak the more you hear. The information and knowledge you have access to will increase substantially once you learn to silence your mind and your mouth. Naturally, your output will decrease and your input will increase.

Ultimately, this will elevate what you know and help you come to terms with how much you don’t know. Realizing how much you don’t know and the humility that comes with this is a true sign of intelligence.

The Dunning-Kruger Effect is when people do not recognize their own incompetence and overestimate what knowledge they have. The more incompetent they are, the more ignorant they seem to be. Before you speak, ask yourself if what you are going to say is true, is kind, is necessary, is helpful. Don’t speak unless it improves on silence.
